As the second-most populous city after Rome in Italy, Milan is the main industrial, commercial and financial center of the country and a leading global city with vitality and diligence. It boasts the headquarters of printing and publishing, industrial design and fashion groups. Together with New York and Paris, the city is considered one of the major world fashion and design capitals.
Located in the Po River Plain, it was initially named Mediolanum, which means “center of the land”, in ancient Rome. Conquered by the Romans, the city was once the capital of the Western Roman Empire.
In the course of the following centuries, it has been alternatively dominated by France, Spain and Austria. The buildings, museums, parks and gardens in the city have witnessed its past glory and prosperity.
